Super Bowl Rematch, Betting Reset

The 2026 NFL season opens Wednesday night with about as much built-in drama as the league could ask for: a Super Bowl LX rematch between New England and defending champion Seattle at Lumen Field. Seven months ago, the Seahawks overwhelmed the Patriots 29-13, holding New England scoreless through three quarters while sacking Drake Maye six times and forcing three turnovers. Now Mike Vrabel’s Patriots return to Seattle as a three-point underdog after opening at +3.5, with the total sitting at 44.5. Both teams were outstanding in 2025: the StatSharp Tip Sheet shows New England averaging 26.5 points per game while allowing 17.9, while Seattle averaged 29.2 and surrendered only 16.9.

The personnel matchup remains elite on both sides. Maye comes off a monster 2025 campaign in which he completed 69.3% of his passes for 5,222 yards, 37 touchdowns and a 107.4 passer rating, while adding 628 rushing yards. New England has also added A.J. Brown to a receiving corps that gives Maye another legitimate matchup-breaking weapon. Seattle counters with Sam Darnold and perhaps the league’s most productive receiver from last season, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who posted 136 catches for 1,992 yards on the StatSharp season ledger. The more important matchup, though, may again be Seattle’s defense against New England’s protection. That unit was the decisive factor in February, and Mike Macdonald’s scheme remains built around disguise, pressure and forcing quarterbacks to hold the ball an extra beat.

From a betting standpoint, this is where the Tip Sheet becomes especially interesting because the strongest indicators do not all point the same direction. Seattle has been phenomenal for bettors: the Seahawks are 13-3 ATS as a favorite since 2025, 15-4 ATS overall and 10-2 ATS when the total falls between 42.5 and 49. Mike Macdonald is also 21-2 straight-up as a Seattle favorite. Yet StatSharp’s game simulation goes the opposite way, projecting New England 21, Seattle 18, creating a six-point edge to the Patriots against the spread. The simulation also produces only 39 projected points, a sizable 6.1-point edge to the Under. Supporting that lower-scoring argument is a league-wide system that has gone 42-16 (72.4%) to the Under since 2022 when backing the Under on good offensive teams playing on the road during Weeks 1-3.

There are also several Week 1 variables that make laying points with Seattle less automatic than February’s result might suggest. New England will be without RB TreVeyon Henderson and center Ben Brown, although DT Christian Barmore is cleared to play; Seattle has ruled out starting safety Ty Okada, while Nick Emmanwori and WR Tory Horton are questionable. Seattle’s offensive backfield has also changed substantially since Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III’s departure, with Zach Charbonnet unavailable to open the year. Weather should not interfere, with temperatures in the mid-70s, light wind and only a minimal chance of rain. The overall StatSharp read is therefore more nuanced than “Seattle won the Super Bowl, so lay the points”: the Seahawks’ historical trends strongly support the defending champions, but the current simulation sees New England +3 as the better side and the Under 44.5 as the clearest numerical value, setting up a fascinating opening-night test of proven Seattle dominance against a Patriots team getting another shot at the defense that ended its season.
