StatSharp Betting Insights
College football is officially back in full force, and Week 1 brings the first loaded weekend of the 2026 season. This week's StatSharp newsletter highlights several of the most interesting betting angles on the board, including Power Rating projections, proven team and coaching trends, and long-running betting systems that have consistently uncovered value. From marquee matchups to situational spots that may be flying under the radar, we'll break down what the numbers are saying as bettors prepare for the first full Saturday of the season.
StatSharp has run our Power Rating model for some of this weekend’s biggest matchups. Below are the projected scores, betting lines, and edges our models highlight for key games on the slate.
ML: BAY +240 (28.7%) · AUB -298 (71.3%) ML Edge: No model edge indicated
O/U: 58.5 · Over 43.9% · Under 56.1% O/U Edge: Under (+4.5)
Game Read: The StatSharp power rating model gives Auburn the advantage at home, projecting an 31-23 Tigers victory. The spread is much tighter, however, with Auburn holding only a 51.2% cover probability at -7.5 and just a half-point model edge. The stronger betting signal comes on the total: the projected 54 combined points sit 4.5 points below the market total of 58.5, producing a 56.1% Under probability. Auburn enters the matchup under head coach Alex Golesh with an offense featuring QB Byrum Brown and RB Alvin Henderson, while Dave Aranda's Baylor counters with transfer QB DJ Lagway and WR Dre'lon Miller. The overall model read favors Auburn to win, but sees considerably more separation between its scoring projection and the total than between the Tigers and the point spread.
O/U: 59.5 · Over 45.4% · Under 54.6% O/U Edge: Under (+3.5)
Game Read: The StatSharp power rating model projects Oklahoma State to win 32-24, but the stronger betting value shows up on the underdog side. Despite the Cowboys being favored by 13.5, Tulsa owns a 61.9% cover probability and a healthy +5.5 ATS edge, suggesting the market may be pricing too much separation between the two teams. The money line also shows an aggressive longshot lean on Tulsa (+10.3%), while the projected total of 56 points creates a modest Under 59.5 signal. Oklahoma State enters the opener under head coach Eric Morris with impact names like RB Caleb Hawkins, WR Chris Barnes, and LB Isaiah Chisom. Tulsa counters with head coach Tre Lamb and key contributors such as WR David Wells Jr., WR Oran Singleton Jr., and S Zach Williams. Net result: the model still favors Oklahoma State outright, but sees Tulsa as the stronger value side and points to a game that stays a bit lower than the posted total.

Projection: Ole Miss 33, Louisville 23 Power Ratings (Off/Def):
LOU OffR 45 · DefR 19 |
MISS OffR 52 · DefR 22
Line: Ole Miss -7 Cover%: LOU 42.8% · MISS 57.2% ATS Edge: Ole Miss (+3)
ML: LOU +220 (25.0%) · MISS -270 (75.0%) ML Edge: Ole Miss (+2.1%)
O/U: 55.5 · Over 50.7% · Under 49.3% O/U Edge: Over (+0.5)
Game Read: The StatSharp power rating model projects a fairly decisive 33-23 Ole Miss win, with the Rebels carrying the stronger overall profile on both sides of the ball and a particularly strong 52 offensive rating. That translates into a meaningful model lean on Ole Miss -7, where the Rebels are given a 57.2% cover probability and a +3 ATS edge, while the money line also shows a modest value signal at Ole Miss (+2.1%). The total is much tighter, with only a slight lean to the Over 55.5. For Louisville, head coach Jeff Brohm brings in a roster featuring playmakers like RB Isaac Brown, WR Tre Richardson, and DL Clev Lubin. On the Ole Miss side, head coach Pete Golding has impact names such as QB Walker Howard, LB Suntarine Perkins, and TE Caleb Odom. Net result: the model sees Ole Miss as the stronger side, with the clearest betting support landing on the Rebels against the number.

Betting system definition: Since 2017, fade home favorites of 21.5 points or more in the opening weeks when the favorite averaged at least 8.5 yards per pass attempt the previous season and both teams have five or fewer returning offensive starters.
System results: 23-4 ATS (85.2%) since 2017, with qualifying underdogs losing by an average score of 41.8-13.5 despite receiving an average spread of +37.9. Eighteen of the 27 qualifiers covered by at least seven points.
Early-season betting markets can be slow to account for just how much an elite quarterback means to an offense, particularly when a powerhouse is laying a huge number based partly on what it accomplished the previous season. Since 2017, this system has gone an extraordinary 23-4 ATS (85.2%) fading home favorites of 21.5 points or more that averaged at least 8.5 yards per pass attempt the previous season when both teams enter the opening weeks with five or fewer returning offensive starters. The theory is straightforward: oddsmakers and bettors remember last year's explosive offense, but the new version may need several games to replace its quarterback, rebuild chemistry and establish an offensive identity. These favorites can still dominate—the system's underdogs have lost by an average score of 41.8-13.5—but with an enormous average spread of +37.9, simply failing to reproduce the prior year's offensive efficiency has repeatedly been enough for the underdog to cover.
That makes Saturday's North Texas at Indiana opener a fascinating application. Defending national champion Indiana must begin life after Heisman Trophy-winning QB Fernando Mendoza, with Curt Cignetti now turning the offense over to veteran transfer QB Josh Hoover. Cignetti has built Indiana into an elite program, and the Hoosiers could certainly win comfortably, but this system isn't necessarily predicting an upset—it is questioning whether a heavily favored team can immediately reproduce championship-level offensive execution after losing the player who directed it. Hoover is an experienced quarterback, but new personnel and new offensive chemistry can create an early-season adjustment period, making a massive point spread difficult to cover. That's exactly the type of situation this long-running system has exploited, with 18 of its 27 qualifiers covering by at least seven points and North Texas fitting the profile in Week 1.
The downtrodden Spartans have badly underachieved the past few years and simply have not been trustworthy in the favorite role, especially at home. Since the 2024 season, Michigan State is just 0-8 ATS as a home favorite, failing to cover despite winning those games by an average score of only 26.6 to 22.0. The theory behind this trend is that the betting market has continued to price Michigan State more like a recognizable Big Ten brand than a program consistently capable of controlling games, which has left the Spartans laying inflated numbers they have not been able to justify on the field. Even when they win, they have tended to play tighter, lower-margin games than expected, making them a risky proposition when oddsmakers ask them to win comfortably.
Island Advantage Is Back
Timmy Chang has restored one of college football's most unique home-field advantages in Hawaii. Since the 2023 season, Chang's teams are an outstanding 13-2 ATS (87%) at home against conference opponents, producing a +61.4% ROI while frequently thriving as an underdog with an average line of +7.4. Playing in Honolulu has always presented unusual challenges for visiting teams—including the long trip to the islands, major time-zone adjustment and a completely different game-week routine—and Chang's Rainbow Warriors have once again been capitalizing on those factors. The trend becomes especially relevant Saturday night when UNLV travels to Hawaii: Chang's teams have averaged 27.5 points while allowing 24.0 in this situation, repeatedly turning what the betting market sees as a difficult matchup into a highly profitable home-field spot.
Iowa Favorites Keep Going Over
Iowa may still carry a reputation as a slow-paced, defense-first team, but recent results show a very different betting pattern when the Hawkeyes are expected to win. Since the 2024 season, the Over is 15-5 (75%) in Iowa games as a favorite, generating a +43.2% ROI with an average posted total of just 40.6. The theory is that Iowa's low-scoring reputation continues to suppress totals, while games in which the Hawkeyes are favored often produce more offensive output than the market anticipates; Iowa has averaged 32.3 points in these spots, helping push games over even when the opponent contributes only modest scoring. That makes Saturday's matchup with Northern Illinois at Iowa especially noteworthy, as another relatively low total could once again create value if the Hawkeyes control the game offensively rather than simply grinding out a low-scoring win.
